With the rise of fuel prices and the increase of offshore support vessels' marine operations, the proportion of ship fuel costs in the operating costs is getting higher and higher. The ship characteristics of offshore support vessels and the special nature of their operational tasks determine that the experience of fuel saving of ordinary cargo ships cannot be copied and reproduced, and a path of energy saving and emission reduction specific to offshore support vessels must be explored.
In this paper, based on analyzing various factors affecting the fuel consumption of offshore support vessels, we screened out the influential factors with large and controllable space for fuel saving of offshore support vessels, and put forward the implementation ideas of energy saving and emission reduction.
In order to analyze the results as comprehensively and practically as possible, we have analyzed the main factors affecting the fuel consumption of offshore support vessels and listed their main controllable stages and solutions.
● Construction Control Aspects
1. Reasonable ship type and propulsion system
Reasonable ship type and propulsion system can greatly reduce fuel consumption through targeted selection of new ship types. In order to comply with this trend, Qinhai Shipyard has invested heavily in research and development, and fully considered the key factors of reducing fuel consumption and improving energy efficiency when developing new ship types and propulsion systems.
2. Pitch Matching
For the pitch propeller matching, Qinhai Shipyard determines the propeller matching according to the specific ship during the ship design and construction process, which can reduce the ship's fuel consumption.
● The Use of Vessels
1. Sailing with the tide
Choose a reasonable sailing time and sail with the tide for the whole or part of the voyage. Dispatch directly according to the tide to give orders on the time of departure and the time of entering the harbor, but the ship should keep the economic speed.
2. Scientific dispatching of ships
Scientifically and reasonably mobilize the ships and reduce the frequency of ships docking and leaving the platform. Make a careful production plan and reduce the number of ship voyages appropriately.
● For Vessel Speed Control
1. Optimum longitudinal inclination: the ship's speed can be increased by adjusting the draft difference under the same main engine power.
2. Economic speed: Due to the special nature of offshore support vessel's operation and operation mode, in general, it doesn't have to pay attention to the income and expenditure factors such as fuel price, arrival time and freight rate. What has the greatest impact on its economy is the total fuel consumption, i.e. controlling the fuel consumption per nautical mile is the primary task. Therefore, the concept of "economic speed" has the most practical significance.
Ideas for fuel saving at economic speed:
① Select several typical environmental conditions and ship states, such as weather, sea state, loading, etc., and measure the economic speed;
② Use the economic speed under several typical environmental conditions and ship states to guide ship navigation;
③ Establish "real-time monitoring system of ship fuel consumption".
Nowadays, energy saving has become a top priority, and there are many ways to save fuel on offshore support vessels.
